"I have a black pearl necklace that I don't use anymore," she said.
We received a message from a customer far away.
At first, it was a vague image, "I wonder if it's a simple necklace." That's enough. Her personality resides in those vague words.
First, we asked her to confirm the size of the pearl. It was about 10mm.
While showing her photos of pearl jewelry that had been reformed before, the customer also searched for images on the internet and sent screenshots to each other. After deciding on the budget and general direction, she sent us her necklace.
When we removed the pearl, it had a slightly oval shape. This individuality, not perfectly round, became an important key to the later design.
While refining the design, the customer suddenly said:
"Come to think of it, I really love kimonos and Japanese patterns. But you don't often see Japanese patterns in jewelry, do you?"
With that one word, the direction of the design became clear as if a fog had lifted.
We decided to proceed with a Japanese pattern. Among several candidates, we chose Shippo (seven treasures).
— About the Shippo pattern
It is a traditional auspicious Japanese pattern consisting of continuously connected circles in all directions. Derived from Buddhist teachings, its name refers to the seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, agate, and tridacna. The spreading shape of interconnected circles is said to symbolize connections between people, harmony, and infinite expansion—"縁が縁を呼ぶ" (en ga en wo yobu), meaning good connections attract more good connections. It is a pattern like a prayer, continuing without interruption.
We designed the top of the 10mm black pearl to be enveloped by the Shippo pattern from four directions. Because the pearl is oval, covering the top with the pattern further emphasizes its teardrop silhouette. I enjoy moments like this, as if conversing with the pearl.
During production, we received a request from the customer.
"I don't want it to be too flashy. I want a simple impression."
Her initial request remained consistent. That unwavering focus is reflected in the work.
That's why we paid particular attention to the placement of the diamonds. From the front, the Shippo pattern stands out cleanly, and only when tilted does a diamond sparkle.
The main elements are the pearl and the Shippo pattern. The diamonds serve as support, providing a "glitter that you notice when you least expect it."
The diamonds are repurposed from the original pendant top. Diamonds were also set in the bail, allowing the customer to use their existing chain.
We chose white gold for the finish.
Black pearls possess complex hues, appearing green, red, or purple depending on the viewing angle and light. The purity of white gold does not obscure these colors; rather, it highlights them. The luster of the pearl became the focal point of the finished piece.
Though simple, upon closer inspection, the Shippo circles connect endlessly. It became a unique blend of Japanese and Western styles, reflecting the customer's personality.
The completed pendant top was carefully packaged and delivered to the customer.
After a while, we received a letter.
"I received the necklace. Thank you so much. It's really lovely and cute!"
Since the customer lives far away, we couldn't deliver it to her in person. But her letter provided a clear sense of achievement. We hope to see you wearing it someday.
